Fallen Leaf, Withered Wind ...and Love- by Saikat Baksi

Two threads of lives lay there coiled into a single entity flickering like an eternal flame. The clock ceased movement. Night froze in silence. Sindhu clasped Samsara with frantic desperation. She breathed his sweat, love and obsession.

“I shall not go away…” Samsara murmured with a feeble hint of smile.
Sindhu released her slowly and pleaded, “Please…don’t”.

“But should I not go back tonight?”
Sindhu fell silent and nodded like a subjugated infant, “Yes”.

“You know Sindhu…
my life is like a weed rooted on barren soil
anchored with mindless resolve.”

“I know,” replied Sindhu staring blankly into the space.
“Yet I am a human but not a weed.
Often I long to get lost…
lost in some faraway land at least for some time.”

Sindhu laughed,
“There is the mistake my dear.
If you know the way back, you are not lost.
Are you? If you are lost…
you can never get back.
So…it cannot be for some time…if at all…forever.”

GOD Does Not Play Dice- by David A. Shiang

Does God play dice with the universe? Do events happen by chance? Do we have free will? Was Einstein right in his assessment of quantum theory?

If you seek answers to such questions, you have come to the right place. In my groundbreaking book God Does Not Play Dice.

The final answers to such crucial questions can surely be achieved, and we can definitely go beyond the uncertainty and confusion that some scientists claim cannot be overcome.
  • The final and only solution to the free will problem.
  • Why Stephen Hawking is wrong when he says that there is `evidence` that God plays dice.
  • The role of memory in solving the free will problem.
  • The type of certainty that can be achieved.
  • How past, present, and future are interrelated.
  • Why key ideas presented by Richard Dawkins and John Allen Paulos are false.
  • The reason why much of our worrying is misplaced and irrelevant.
  • Why an important pillar of evolutionary theory is based on an incorrect assumption, making Darwinism `defunct`.

A River on Fire- by Jasvinder Sharma

This bouquet of short stories presents a true-to-life picture of the society before us. Instead of an imagined world, the storyteller through these stories offers a slice of life, a down-to-earth scenario in which the reader finds himself involved unknowingly. The writer having a good understanding of basic human feelings brings them out dexterously in these tales on divergent issues. These fine, tumultuous, powerful and heartfelt sagas are not just stories; these are experiences. Reading them, the reader does not remain solely an observer; he becomes a part of them. The stories open a world of fallacy, malice and maladjustment, and take him directly to it. This is the world that is already known to him, but he very often chooses to close his eyes to it. Brimming with unlikely and colourful characters, the tales offer a fine blend of irony and humanity, with some of them replete with heart-warming humour. The world of the storyteller has the fullness of human psyche, with its dreams, passions, awe and wonder. Despite the ambience of fantasy, hardcore realism, quandaries and predicament underline his stories.

Dancing on the Notes of Life- by KB Trehan

Dancing on the notes of life is a motivational semi-fiction about a character named Seth. It shows how he fights his way through the various hurdles that he comes across in life. He is not a superhuman or a divine creature, but just an ordinary human being like us, who has the courage to bid farewell to his hurtful past and move on.

Often while going through the aisles of our lives, we come across various hindrances we stumble upon. Some people remain where they are, brooding over their fall; while some make the brave effort to stand on their feet again and boldly cross the obstacles. It is the latter who emerge victorious at the end.

A smooth sea can never make a skilled mariner. In the hard times, we learn the vital lessons of life. The key lies in accepting each day in life as it comes. Remember, it is in darkness alone that we get to see the stars!

Sweet are the uses of adversity,
which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
wears yet a precious jewel in his head…

Three Shades of Green- by Manasa Rachapalli

Three Shades of Green has been written taking into consideration different perspectives of human life. The three stories:
\'Sandy and Pearl\',
\'A Fine Line\' ,
\'Peetam\'
have different storylines about different protagonists set in different situations of human life. Underlying each story is a message, which is conveyed in a subtle manner throughout the stories. Critical issues, like female foeticide and dowry, have been taken up in the first story very beautifully. The second story talks about love, betrayal and a fine line between love and selfishness. The third story \'Peetam\' talks about the immortality of the soul. Three Shades of Green is a beautiful presentation of feminist literature interspersed with wonderful emotions of the human mind; the characters are so real, that you would often mistake them for real life people. The challenges before two women, each confronted with a different problem, how a person in love crosses the fine line between love and selfishness and the invincibility of the human soul presented through use of simple language and a mature style makes all these stories worth reading.

The Angel of God- by Jyothi Menon

“…I cannot wear the mask of decency ever. The world will continue to remind me of the gutter from where I rose. Never mind that. You will not become another Moosa Bhai. I will not let you do that. You are going to become the master and the brain behind a business empire. A completely legit one. Do you understand me, Bhaskaran?” Moosa looked like he was talking from somewhere deep beyond his being. His whole countenance was lit up, he was looking deep into Bhaskaran`s eyes, poring into the young man`s mind, touching a part of that young absorbing soul and creating all at once a moment of sheer beauty and absolute magic for the young boy. Once more it seemed to Bhaskaran that the Angel of God had touched him, sending goose pimples running down the length of his body, his eyes brimming with tears of gratitude, hope and a lack of words to thank this man whom so many feared as The Enemy.

Men, as they are!- by Rupa T Nath

 • Did you know that a man\\\'s obsession with his bike subtly shows the affection he demands from his woman?
• Did you know that pink may not be a woman\\\'s favourite colour after all?
• Did you know that men are not polygamous by nature?
• Most importantly, did you know that each zodiac sign carries its own style of making love?
The book answers all of these and more, including how I balk at the pressure to get married only to realise that there are many more women like me who love their independence, space and regular infiltration of office workload.
It also reveals how men are not a confusing lot to understand. You just need to switch your brains on to understand prerogatives better. It unleashes the power hidden in the zodiac sign of your man to know if he is the answer to your prayers or you need to wait a little longer continuing the ritual of fasting on specific religious days for a perfect partner.

Haunting Silhouettes- by Sandeep Sudhakaran

What happens when a wife wakes up one morning to find that she was not sleeping with her husband all this while, but a stranger whom she had known for more than seven years.

An emotional turmoil gets unearthed from the charred ashes of memories when this lady starts digging into the past of her husband’s life.

The fact that every current action can be correlated to the past buried somewhere in the recesses of one’s brain makes this book, which looks like a collection of short stories at the first glance, a finely crafted and woven work of fiction.

Godaan- by Munshi Premchand

Godaan is one of the most celebrated novels of Munshi Premchand. Set in pre-independence India, the novel captures social and economic conflict in a north Indian village.

The story revolves around Horiram, a poor village farmer, and the struggle of his family to survive and maintain their self-respect. Horiram does everything in his capacity to fulfil his sole desire – to own a cow, which is considered a farmer\\\\\\\'s source of wealth and happiness.

One of the classics of Indian literature, the book offers an insight into the colonial history of India, captures the ethnic flavour of the Indian villages and also catches the human emotions in all their rawness.

Kite Strings- by Andaleeb Wajid

“Everyone I met in the family thought it was a strange hankering I had. ‘To do something.’ What? You get married, you have children, and you manage your house. What else can you do? I was asked sceptically. I didn’t know. I knew Ammi and Abbu wanted to get me married. And here was Imtiaz, after the same thing too.”

Have you ever known what it is like to be on the brink of freedom and not taste it? Like a kite that flies in the blue skies but cannot escape because of the string that tugs it down? Who holds that string? Can the kite escape eventually? Will it have to be cut down by another ruthless kite before it can fall to the ground gracelessly?

Kite Strings is the story of Mehnaz, a Muslim girl from an orthodox South Indian family where despite the trappings of education and reluctant modernity, she realises that she is not allowed to make the important decisions of her life on her own.

Easy to spot is her constant tussle with her mother over what Mehnaz’s priorities should be. But not so easy to understand is the constant yearning for direction in her life. As a novel of self discovery, Mehnaz encapsulates the lives of many such girls who are not even aware that they too can do something worthwhile with their lives.

Prisoners of Hate- by C.V.Murali

Set in Mumbai, this novel delves into the minds of Farhan, Madhav and Sanjay – three men whose lives are intertwined together by a quirk of fate.

It traces the history of their forefathers and the events leading to the 1993 Mumbai riots and subsequent terror attacks and the paths chosen by the three protagonists.

The tale moves from pre-partition days to current day Mumbai, looking intimately at the changing milieu and its impact on the three men and their families.

As the narrative progresses, there also emerges a constant dialogue with the readers, bringing the mirror to their face and drawing them into looking at various societal issues, the greatest of which are intolerance and apathy.

The three men are drawn towards each other on a bloody morning near Shivaji Park, Mumbai\\\'s middle class hub. They go back, changed, but are again pulled towards each other. The story culminates at the same place, as dusk slowly settles in, fifteen years later as the three adversaries are pitched into a battle of life and death.

Mukund soon begins to realise that the real reasons for his cousin\\\'s behaviour may not lie in Jalsaur, but in the tortured past of his family as it prospered and decayed over three generations. Some of the reasons point accusingly to his father, who left the town ages ago but never got around to severing his roots. The Journey of OM- by Chandru Bhojwani

The naked flames danced gracefully around me as the pain flowed, through my veins. The grief and sorrow enveloped me and I descended into it without resistance. Coldplay strummed their beat as their melancholic lyrics rang so very true.

The candles began to die one by one. They had served their purpose for that brief moment in time and finally reached their destiny. The sands of time continued to slip on by. The merlot mixed with my blood and the bitterness ran through me.

Devastated by his beloved\\\'s betrayal, Om collapses both physically as well as emotionally and with that, begins his arduous battle for peace. Torn between love and anger, Om inadvertently starts to lose his grip on life as he knew it causing his world to spiral out of control.

Hoping to recover, Om turns to his closest friends, Arun and Mona. However, instead of gaining support, he bears witness to the trials which have beseiged their lives.

Like life, the three tales entwine sprinkled with humour, tragedy, perseverance and karmic retribution, and through Om, they bind together into a climactic conclusion.

Riddle Plays- by Rabindranath Tagore

Innocent laughter is rarely seen these days. From very early age, children today are made to carry heavily loaded bags to school. At times, those bags weigh more than their own body weights. Their lives principally rotate round the many C\\\'s, Career, Computer, and Competition, to name a few. The number of hours and minutes available to them are strictly divided for each pursuit, lest even a second is wasted! There is just no time for them to read a book, unless it is a textbook. Just no time to look out of the window, just like that, doing nothing!

Being non-critical about the existing system, where is the scope, space or time, for that matter, for moulding the young intellect with the care it deserves? That is a critical question. We may face it, or may ignore it. The choice is ours.

Tagore (1861-1941) always believed in development of superior intellect in complete harmony with time, system and context. Hasya Kautuk (1907), particularly written with this objective, is one of the masterpieces among his numerous brilliant creations. Comprised of short plays, this book is a discovery of adolescent intellect through humour.

Beyond Diamond Rings- by Kusum Chopra

Beyond Diamond Rings is a book that spans five generations. Yet it is not a story of generations that encapsulates a family history. Instead the book touches upon the lives of a women-centric Sindhi family of the Bhaibund community. The story revolves around the family’s post-partition rehabilitation experiences and presents a panorama of relationships between the women. The book follows them from pre-partition times to ours.

The Bhaibunds were the Merchant Princes of Sindh, who celebrated their success with fabulous homes and flamboyant weddings, Sindhi roots streaked with the colours of the world.

Post-partition’s major sociological development was a break with the ancient tradition of Bhaibund men leaving their families at home to live and work abroad, very often fathering a brood there. Genetically programmed almost to live with minimal male interference in their day-to-day functioning, the womenfolk blossomed on their own, taking hold of their lives. Living together with their men made for gender discomforts, in sharp contrast to the flair for living displayed by those lone women whose best was brought out by absent husbands or widowhood.

This book is about the women of those Merchant Princes, how they coped with the trauma and the freedom of this lifestyle, individually and collectively in locales as varied as Pune, Jakarta, Singapore, Dubai, the West Indies and Canary Islands.

Not for $ Anymore- by Kalyan Vaidya

It is heartening to know that Indian businessmen are beginning to acquire companies globally. If the current century is going to be that of Asians, it would be vital for us all to reach a stage of gaining natural respect as was done by the European conquerors and the American entrepreneurs/ technologists in the last centuries. One key enabler in that process could be mutual sharing of learnings to shape ourselves better.

The narrations herein are as anecdotes that happened over the last two decades - in professional and personal lives - with illustrations alongside.

The compilation could be just one droplet in the ocean of daily experiences and learnings that globalising Indians are undergoing. It could be informative to those who carry dreams of conquering the world and aspiring to leave footprints on the sands of time. For those who have scaled some heights in life, it may be refresher of sorts.

Dance O Peacock- by Aruna Jethwani

                                                                Author's Note
During the year 1988, immediately after the Sati (self immolation on husband's pyre) incident in Rajasthan, two of the students from St. Mira's College, Pune, visited the place. They were a part of an investigative team. Their horrifying account made me think. Years later, on my visit to Udaipur, I came across an acquaintance, who was thrown out of her husband's house because she was unable to bear a child. Empowering herself with education, she secured a good job, and found an excellent man for a husband. By facing the challenges, she had regained her social status. With these two incidents etched, novel is written, partially feminist, and partially translating the ethos of a Rajput way of life. A gender based society is slow to tranform. A woman has to take up the challenge, and break the barriers to realise her true identity.

Dance O Peacock is not only Neelam's story; perhaps it is the story of many of us, who inspite of orthodox upbringing yearn to bloom.

Krishna-The God Who Lived as Man is published by Pustak Mahal and this is the third edition in less than two years.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The river was in high tide and the footprints of the Yadavas were more or less washed away. Big waves came rushing to the shore and wiped away some more footprints…

Suddenly Rukmini discovered a familiar footprint and sat beside it…. Her eyes brimmed over with tears…. These were the footprints her hair locks drooped over when she knelt at her Lord`s feet every morning…. These were the footprints she worshipped with chandan…. The footprints of her Lord… of Sri Krishna…! They were deeply immersed in the sand. The impression engraved in the sand was filled with water.

Rukmini`s streaming tears were making an offering in the water-filled footprints.

Daruk arrived and stood beside her….

He looked startled. He could not believe how the footprints filled to the brim with water could contain Rukmini` tears without spilling over. What was further surprising was that not a single tear had dropped out of the carved footprint….

It was not just Krishna… even his footprints were accepting of everyone….
